The 1951 Canadian 5 cents commemorative coin was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the discovery of nickel, a metal for which Canada was the world’s largest producer by that time. The coin’s obverse features the bust of King George VI with the Latin inscription “GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX,” meaning “George VI, by the grace of God, the King.” The reverse design, selected from an open competition, depicts a nickel refinery with low buildings flanking a central smokestack, symbolizing the nickel industry. The coin is made of 100% nickel, weighs 4.54 grams, has a diameter of 21.3 mm, and is magnetic. A total of over 8 million were minted for circulation. This special design was intended for everyday spending and commemorates Canada’s significant role in nickel production.
