2011 – 1 Dollar Loonie Canada

The 2011 Canadian 1 dollar coin, known as the “loonie,” features a design commemorating the centennial of Parks Canada (1911-2011). The obverse bears the updated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the inscription “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA.” The reverse, designed by The Royal Canadian Mint, depicts stylized representations of land, air, and aquatic fauna, various flora, a symbolic park building, and the silhouette of a hiker against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, with the dates “1911-2011” and the word “CANADA” on the periphery. The coin is gold-colored, made primarily of 91.5% nickel with 8.5% bronze plating, weighs 7 grams, and measures 26.5 mm in diameter, continuing the traditional loon-themed design lineage introduced in 1987.
