The 2020 Canadian 1 dollar coin commemorating the 75th anniversary of the United Nations Charter is Canada’s first colored circulation dollar coin. Designed by Joel Kimmel on the reverse, it features a world map within an olive branch wreath paired with a red maple leaf symbolizing Canada’s commitment to the UN and its values. The maple leaf is selectively colored red and bears a laser mark of a single maple leaf inscribed inside a circle, while the laurel leaves are colored blue, echoing the UN’s official colors. The coin’s reverse also includes the double dates “1945-2020” and the inscription “UN CHARTER CHARTRE DE L’ONU.” The obverse displays the uncrowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. This brass-plated steel coin has a diameter of 26.5 mm and weighs 6.27 grams, released to celebrate Canada’s role as a founding member and contributor to world peace.
