Designed by Canadian artist Valentine De Landro, the reverse depicts Oscar Peterson seated at a piano, playing his civil rights anthem “Hymn to Freedom,” with musical notes and chord symbols from the piece featured in the design. The coin stands out with a selective purple color on the background, which was Oscar Peterson’s favorite color, symbolizing the joy and love of music he conveyed in every performance. The coin is made of three-ply brass plated steel, weighs 6.27 grams, has a diameter of 26.5 mm, and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
