2023 – 2 Dollars Toonie Canada – Riopelle

The 2023 Canadian $2 coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jean Paul Riopelle (1923-2002), a globally revered Canadian artist. The uncolored version of this coin features on its reverse select elements adapted from Panel 29 of Riopelle’s 1992 masterpiece “L’Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg,” showing spray-painted bird-like silhouettes symbolic of the work. The coin’s outer ring includes the “Riopelle100” centenary mark from the Riopelle Foundation, while the obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with a special marking of four pearls signifying the four effigies on Canadian coins and the double date of the Queen’s reign. The coin has a composition of a three-ply nickel-plated steel outer ring and a three-ply brass-plated aluminum bronze inner core, with a weight of 6.99 grams and a diameter of 28 mm. It is issued as a circulation coin with a mintage limit of three million, one million of which are uncolored, uncirculated, and available in special wrap rolls of 25 coins each.​
