The 2009 Canadian 25-cent coin celebrates the women’s hockey gold medal won at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. It is part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s circulation coin series related to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. The coin was designed by Jason Bouwman and depicts two female hockey players raising their arms in victory with a red maple leaf behind them and the 2002 Women’s Hockey inscription. Approximately 22 million circulation coins were produced with a copper-plated steel composition, weighing 4.4 grams and measuring 23.88 mm in diameter. Additionally, around 3 million special colorized versions with a brilliant red maple leaf were minted and distributed randomly in circulation as well as available in special retail locations. The obverse features the uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt.
