The 1968 Canadian 25 cents coin was minted in two distinct versions: one composed of 50% silver and 50% copper, and another made entirely of pure nickel. The silver version, weighing 5.83 grams with a diameter of 23.88 mm, features a non-magnetic quality and carries the iconic caribou design on its reverse, created by Emanuel Hahn, with the Queen Elizabeth II tiara portrait by Arnold Machin on the obverse, inscribed with “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA.” The nickel version, equally 23.88 mm in diameter but lighter at 5.05 grams, is magnetic and darker in color with the same obverse and reverse designs. The 1968 silver quarter had a mintage of around 71 million, while the nickel version was more numerous. Both carry a reeded edge and a medal alignment axis, representing a transition year when silver was being phased out in favor of nickel for circulation quarters.
