Its obverse features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, designed by Arnold Machin, and the reverse depicts a voyageur and a First Nations man paddling a canoe, designed by Emanuel Hahn. This coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a mintage of over 3 million and was originally intended to replace the dollar bill, but it was never fully released for circulation as the dies for the planned design were lost in transit, leading to a new design and coin release in 1987.
