1996 – 5 Cents Canada – Far 6

The 1996 Canadian 5 cents coin Far 6 variety is defined by the position of the “6” in the date relative to the “D” in “CANADA” on the reverse side of the coin. Unlike the Near 6 variety where the “6” is close to the “D,” the Far 6 has a noticeable gap between the tail of the “6” and the base of the “D.” The coin is made of cupro-nickel (75% copper and 25% nickel), weighs 4.6 grams, and has a diameter of 21.2 mm with a plain edge. The obverse features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a circular diamond crown decorated with roses, shamrocks, and thistles, designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, while the reverse shows a beaver on a log, designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray. The Far 6 variety is rarer and more valuable than the Near 6, with values that can reach over $23.60 in mint state condition and higher in better grades, making it a sought-after coin for collectors.
