The obverse side features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a circular diamond crown adorned with roses, shamrocks, and thistles, a design by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The reverse shows a stylized Canadian coat of arms, designed by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, with the lettering “1999 CANADA 50 CENTS.” This coin was produced using a patented multi-layer plating technology aimed at reducing production costs and is magnetic. It was available in circulation, uncirculated, and specimen finishes.​
