The 2006 Canadian 1 dollar coin, commonly called the “loonie,” features an uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse with the inscription “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA,” and a flying loon on the reverse, accompanied by the words “CANADA 2006 DOLLAR.” It is made primarily of 91.5% nickel and 8.5% bronze, weighs 7 grams, and measures 26.72 mm in diameter with a plain edge. The coin is magnetic, has a medal alignment, and was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. The 2006 edition includes a special Olympic Loon variety with the official Canadian Olympic Team emblem on the reverse as a good luck charm for athletes competing in the 2006 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The reverse loon design was created by Robert Ralph Carmichael, except for the Olympic Loon which was designed by Jean-Luc Grondin, and the obverse portrait by Susanna Blunt.
