The 2007 Canadian $2 coin, commonly known as the “Toonie,” is a bi-metallic circulation coin featuring an image of an adult polar bear on an ice floe designed by wildlife artist Brent Townsend. The coin has an outer ring made of 99% nickel and an inner core composed of 92% copper, 6% aluminum, and 2% nickel, weighing 7.3 grams with a diameter of 28 mm. On the obverse side, it bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II without a crown, reflecting the design used from 2006 to 2012. The Toonie was introduced to replace the $2 paper bill and is notable for its durable patented locking mechanism that securely fuses the two metals, giving it a lifespan about 20 times longer than the banknote it replaced.
