The 2016 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly known as the “nickel,” is a circulation coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a mintage of approximately 140,952,000. It is composed of copper-plated steel, consisting of 94.5% steel, 3.5% copper, and 2% nickel, and has a magnetic property. The coin weighs 3.95 grams, measures 21.1 mm in diameter, and has a smooth edge. The obverse features an uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt with the inscription “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA,” while the reverse showcases G. E. Kruger-Gray’s iconic beaver design sitting on a log, with the inscriptions “5 CENTS CANADA 2016” and maple leaves on either side. The coin is available in circulation and specimen finishes and carries a plain (smooth) edge with medal alignment.
