The 2017 Canadian 1 dollar coin, released to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada, features a reverse design by Wesley Klassen titled “Connecting a Nation,” which celebrates Canada’s iconic engineering achievements that unite the country through railways. The design includes landmarks such as the Lion’s Gate Bridge, a prairie grain elevator, the CN Tower, Quebec City’s Chateau Frontenac, and an East Coast lighthouse, symbolizing Canada’s vast geography and history of connection from coast to coast. The coin is made of multi-ply brass-plated steel, weighs 6.27 grams, and measures 26.5 mm in diameter, bearing the inscriptions “CANADA DOLLAR 1867 – 2017” on the reverse and an uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse by Susanna Blunt. This collectible circulation coin is part of a special national series launched by the Royal Canadian Mint after a public contest to celebrate the milestone.
