2018 – 1 Dollar Loonie Canada

The 2018 Canadian 1-dollar coin, known as the “loonie,” features the iconic design of a common loon swimming on a lake with an island in the background, created by wildlife artist Robert R. Carmichael. The coin has an eleven-sided shape with a diameter of 26.5 mm and weighs 6.27 grams. It is composed of multi-ply brass plated steel, giving it a gold-like appearance. The obverse shows an updated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt, with the inscription “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA.” The coin’s reverse includes the inscriptions “CANADA,” “DOLLAR,” and the year “2018,” and incorporates a laser security mark in the shape of a maple leaf to prevent counterfeiting. This coin continues the tradition of Canada’s iconic loonie, which has been a symbol of the Canadian dollar since its introduction in 1987.
