The 2018 Canadian $2 coin, known popularly as the “Toonie,” features a design of an adult polar bear standing on an ice floe, symbolizing Canada’s Arctic wildlife. This bi-metallic coin has an outer ring of multi-ply nickel-plated steel and an inner insert of multi-ply brass-plated aluminum bronze, weighing 6.92 grams with a diameter of 28 millimeters. The polar bear design was created by wildlife artist Brent Townsend and has been a hallmark of the Toonie since its introduction in 1996, representing the resilience and natural heritage of the Arctic environment. The coin’s obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, reflecting modern Canadian coinage.
