The 2021 Canadian 1 dollar coin, known as the Klondike Gold Rush 125th Anniversary colored coin, commemorates the historic gold discovery that triggered the Klondike Gold Rush in 1896. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, it features a multi-ply brass plated steel composition with a magnetic quality, weighing 6.27 grams and having a diameter of 26.5 mm with a plain smooth edge. The reverse design, created by Canadian artist Jori van der Linde, showcases an artistic rendition of the gold discovery scene, including key figures of the gold rush such as Keish (Skookum Jim Mason), Shaaw Tlàa (Kate Carmack), Kàa Goox (Dawson Charlie), and George Carmack panning for gold. The coin also highlights the cultural symbol of Ëdhä Dädhëchą (Moosehide Slide) in selective red and white colors on the reverse, representing the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people’s deep connection to the land. The obverse bears an uncrowned bust of Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt, and the legend around it reads “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA DOLLAR,” while the reverse reads “CANADA 1896 KLONDIKE 2021.” The colored version of the coin, with a circulation mintage of 2,000,000, captures the essence and significance of the Klondike Gold Rush in Canadian history with a modern visual impact.
