The 2023 Canadian 5-cent coin features the classic beaver design on the reverse, an iconic symbol of Canada created by artist G.E. Kruger-Gray, which has been used since 1937. The obverse displays the new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Steven Rosati, marking the first year that Canadian circulation coins bear King Charles III’s image instead of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin is composed of copper-plated steel (94.5% steel, 3.5% copper, 2% nickel plating), has a plain smooth edge, and a diameter of 21.2 mm. It is magnetic and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint at the Winnipeg facility. This design represents a transition in Canadian coinage with the introduction of King Charles III’s image on all circulating coins for 2023, while retaining the traditional beaver reverse design.
