2024 – 1 Dollar Loonie Canada – L. M. Montgomery Colored

The 2024 Canadian 1 dollar coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of L. M. Montgomery’s birth is a beautifully colored circulation coin that honors the beloved Canadian author of Anne of Green Gables. Designed by Canadian artist Brenda Jones, the reverse side of the coin features a profile portrait of Montgomery around the time she wrote her famous novel, accompanied by her signature and a cat drawing she often included in inscriptions. The design creatively flows from Montgomery depicted putting pen to paper at her writing desk, symbolized by a portfolio and inkwell, to Anne Shirley, her fictional heroine, gazing out at the colorful landscape of Prince Edward Island, the inspirational setting for many of Montgomery’s stories. The obverse showcases the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Steven Rosati. The coin is made of multi-ply brass-plated steel, weighs 6.27 grams, has a diameter of 26.5 mm, and features selective color detailing on the reverse, making it the first Canadian circulation coin to feature a literary figure. The coin is edged plain and was issued in brilliant uncirculated condition, celebrating Montgomery’s literary legacy and the power of imagination she inspired.
