2024 – 1 Dollar Loonie Canada – L. M. Montgomery

The 2024 Canadian 1 dollar coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of L. M. Montgomery, the celebrated Canadian author best known for the Anne of Green Gables series. Released by the Royal Canadian Mint on June 26, 2024, this circulation coin features a profile portrait of Montgomery from around the time she wrote the famous novel, along with her signature and a cat drawing she often included in inscriptions, designed by Canadian artist Brenda Jones. The coin’s design pays tribute to her imagination and literary influence, depicting the author putting pen to paper, flowing into an image of Anne Shirley gazing out over the Prince Edward Island landscape that inspired many of Montgomery’s works. The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III by Steven Rosati. The coin is made from multi-ply brass-plated steel, weighs 6.27 grams, measures 26.5 mm in diameter, and is available in both regular and colorized circulation finishes, making it the first Canadian coin to feature an author and celebrate Canadian literary heritage in this way.
