The Canadian 2 dollar coin introduced in 2012 featured significant security enhancements, including a patented multi-ply plated steel (MPPS) technology with a steel core plated in alternating layers of metals for heightened electromagnetic signatures, making counterfeiting more difficult and the coin more cost-effective and durable. Visible security features were also added: two laser mark micro-engraved maple leaves in circles at the bottom of the reverse, a virtual image of two maple leaves at the top of the reverse created by angled engraving (which changes appearance when tilted), and edge-lettering with “CANADA” and “2 DOLLARS” along the coin’s outer rim.
