The 1938 Canadian 5-cent coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, features a plain edge, is magnetic, and is composed entirely of nickel weighing approximately 4.54–4.96 grams and measuring 21.21–21.2 mm in diameter. On the obverse is the bare-headed portrait of King George VI engraved by Thomas Humphrey Paget, with the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP,” signifying “George VI, by the grace of God, King and Emperor of India”. The reverse showcases a beaver on a log, a motif introduced in 1937 and designed by G.E. Kruger-Gray, now an iconic symbol for Canadian nickels; nearly 3.9 million coins were produced for circulation in this year. Collectors may encounter varieties like die clashes, a pointed or doubled “3,” and other minting errors.
