The 1957 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly known as a nickel, is made of 100% nickel with a weight of 4.54 grams and a diameter of approximately 21.21 to 21.3 mm. The obverse side features a laurel-wreathed bust of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA,” designed by Mary Gillick. The reverse side depicts a beaver sitting on a log, an iconic Canadian symbol, designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray. The coin has a plain smooth edge and is magnetic due to its nickel composition. In 1957, approximately 7,387,703 of these coins were minted for circulation by the Royal Canadian Mint. There is a notable variety called the “bug tail,” which has a die pit on the beaver’s tail, increasing its value among collectors.
