The 1967 Canadian 1 cent coin was issued to commemorate Canada’s Centennial of Confederation, marking 100 years since the founding of Canada in 1867. It features a unique design distinct from the usual maple leaf: the obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, designed by Arnold Machin, and the reverse depicts a rock dove, a design by Canadian artist Alex Colville. The coin is composed of 98% copper, 0.5% tin, and 1.5% zinc, weighs 3.24 grams, and has a diameter of 19.05 mm with a plain smooth edge. It was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint and includes both circulation and uncirculated versions, with a mintage of over 345 million coins for circulation and around 963,000 proof-like versions. This coin holds commemorative value with a modest melt value of around 4 cents CAD, but some rare variations such as the “double date” version are highly sought after by collectors.
