The 1978 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly called a nickel, was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a mintage of 137,079,273 pieces. It is made of 99% nickel, weighs 4.54 grams, and has a diameter of 21.21 mm with a plain (smooth) edge. The obverse features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, designed by Arnold Machin, surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA.” The reverse displays a classic beaver sitting on a log, designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray, with the inscriptions “5 CENTS CANADA 1978,” flanked by two maple leaves. The coin is magnetic and was produced in circulation, uncirculated, and specimen finishes. It has a melt value of approximately $0.12 CAD and shows the medal alignment of design elements.
