The 1985 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly known as the nickel, is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel with a weight of 4.54 grams and a diameter of 21.2 millimeters. It features a non-magnetic, plain edge and carries a medal orientation axis. On the obverse side, the coin displays a bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, designed by Arnold Machin, while the reverse showcases a beaver sitting on a log, designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray, a design first introduced in 1937. The coin carries the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA” on the obverse and “5 CENTS CANADA 1985” on the reverse. It was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a mintage of 126,618,000 coins for circulation. The coin is available in circulation, uncirculated, specimen, and proof finishes, and its melt value is approximately 6.4 cents CAD as of April 2025.
