The 1995 Canadian 1 dollar coin, commonly known as the “Loonie,” is made of 91.5% nickel with 8.5% bronze plating, weighing 7 grams and measuring 26.72 mm in diameter with a plain smooth edge. The obverse features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a circular diamond crown decorated with roses, shamrocks, and thistles, designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The reverse, designed by Robert Ralph Carmichael, depicts a Canadian loon swimming on water with an island in the background, with the inscriptions “CANADA” and “1995 DOLLAR” around the periphery. There is also a special 1995 Peacekeeping edition that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, featuring the Peacekeeping Monument on the reverse. The coin has a smooth edge, medal alignment, and was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a mintage of over 41 million for circulation coins. It is magnetic and was produced in circulation, specimen, and proof finishes.
