The 2004 Canadian 2-dollar coin, known as the “Toonie,” features a bi-metallic design with a nickel outer ring and an aluminum bronze inner core. Its reverse side portrays an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe, an image created by wildlife artist Brent Townsend. The coin was introduced in 1996 to replace the 2-dollar bill and is distinguished by a patented coin-locking mechanism that prevents the two parts from separating. The 2004 coin retained the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, featuring the design by Susanna Blunt from 2003 onward, and the coin’s lifespan is about twenty times longer than paper currency. This coin is widely recognized for its durability and iconic polar bear design.
