The 2005 Canadian 2-dollar coin, commonly known as the “Toonie,” is a bi-metallic coin with a distinctive outer ring made of 100% nickel and an inner core composed of 92% copper, 6% aluminum, and 2% nickel. It weighs 7.3 grams and has a diameter of 28 millimeters. The coin features an image of an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe, designed by wildlife artist Brent Townsend, symbolizing Canada’s northern wildlife. The obverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. The Toonie was introduced in 1996 to replace the 2-dollar bill and is manufactured using a patented bi-metallic coin-locking mechanism by the Royal Canadian Mint, making it durable with a lifespan about 20 times longer than paper currency.
