The 2006 Canadian 2 dollar coin, known as the “Toonie,” was issued to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its introduction in 1996. It was produced in two versions in 2006: one featuring the traditional polar bear design by artist Tony Bianco, with the date beneath the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and another updated version showing the bear looking up at the Aurora Borealis, with the date above the effigy. The coin is bi-metallic, composed of an outer ring of 99% nickel and an inner core of 92% copper, 6% aluminum, and 2% nickel, with a weight of 7.3 grams and a diameter of 28 mm. This design celebrates the iconic polar bear that has become symbolic of the Toonie since its original release in 1996, when it replaced the two-dollar bill.
