The 2006 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly called a nickel, was minted primarily by the Royal Canadian Mint in two main versions: one made of a copper-nickel alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel) and weighing 4.6 grams, and another plated version made of copper-plated steel (94.5% steel, 3.5% copper, 2% nickel) weighing 3.95 grams. Both versions feature an uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, with the legend “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA,” and the iconic reverse design shows a beaver sitting on a log above the inscriptions “5 CENTS CANADA 2006,” designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray. The coin has a diameter of about 21.2 mm, a plain smooth edge, and the orientation of the design alignment is medal (↑↑). It was issued in circulation, uncirculated, and specimen finishes, and the 2006 plated steel versions also bear the “P” mint mark or the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) logo on the obverse.
