The Canadian 2 dollar coin introduced in 2012 featured significant security enhancements, including a patented multi-ply plated steel (MPPS) technology with a steel core plated in alternating layers of metals for heightened electromagnetic signatures, making counterfeiting more difficult and the coin more cost-effective and durable. Visible security features were also added: two laser mark micro-engraved maple leaves in circles at the bottom of the reverse, a virtual image of two maple leaves at the top of the reverse created by angled engraving (which changes appearance when tilted), and edge-lettering with “CANADA” and “2 DOLLARS” along the coin’s outer rim. These innovations, which do not appear on earlier issues, contributed to enhanced security and the modernization of Canadian coinage, as well as making it easier to verify authentic coins.
