The 2014 Canadian 1 dollar coin, known as the “Lucky Loonie,” is a brass-plated steel coin weighing 6.27 grams with a diameter of 26.5 mm and an 11-sided smooth edge. It features the uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, designed by Susanna Blunt, and on the reverse, the iconic common loon spreading its wings while sitting on rippling lake waters, designed by Emily Damstra. This special edition coin celebrates the Canadian Olympic Team at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, displaying the Canadian Olympic Team logo in red coloring beside the loon. The “Lucky Loonie” tradition originates from 2002 when a loonie was buried under the ice at the Olympic hockey venue for good luck, and since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued special “Lucky Loonie” coins for subsequent Olympics.
