The 2020 Canadian 1 dollar coin, commonly known as the “Loonie,” features on its reverse a depiction of a common loon, a bird native to Canada, with the year “2020” inscribed below. The obverse portrays an uncrowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt, with the inscription “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA 2020.” The coin is made of multi-ply brass plated steel, weighing 6.27 grams, with a diameter of 26.5 mm, and has an eleven-sided (Reuleaux polygon) shape with a plain edge. It is magnetic and was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a circulation finish. The design of the loon on the reverse was created by Robert Ralph Carmichael, continuing the tradition seen on loonies since their introduction in 1987. In 2020, there were also commemorative versions released for the 75th anniversary of the United Nations featuring special reverse designs, including colored maple leaf highlights, but the standard 2020 Loonie retains the classic loon design.
