The 2023 Canadian $2 National Indigenous Peoples Day colored coin is a special commemorative circulation coin celebrating the arts, cultures, and heritage of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. The coin features a unique collaborative reverse design by three Indigenous women artists: Megan Currie (English River First Nation), Myrna Pokiak (Agnaviak) (Inuvialuit Settlement Region), and Jennine Krauchi (Red River Métis). Their artwork weaves together individual expressions of their distinct cultural identities into a powerful, colorful tribute to Indigenous traditions and history. The coin is bimetallic, with an outer ring of three-ply nickel-plated steel and an inner core of three-ply brass-plated aluminum bronze with selective color. It weighs 6.99 grams with a diameter of 28 millimeters and bears interrupted serrations on the edge. The obverse side features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, along with special markings including four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have appeared on Canadian coins and the double date of her reign. This coin marks the first time multiple Indigenous artists collaborated on a single Canadian coin design and serves as an open-ended invitation for all Canadians to honor National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated on June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice.
