The 1978 Canadian 1 cent coin, also known as the penny, was minted in a circulation of approximately 911 million coins. It is composed of 98% copper, 0.5% tin, and 1.5% zinc, with a weight of 3.24 grams, a diameter of 19.05 mm, and a thickness of 1.55 mm. The coin features a plain smooth edge and is non-magnetic. The obverse side displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, showing her wearing a tiara, surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II D – G – REGINA.” The reverse side was designed by G.E. Kruger-Gray and depicts two maple leaves on the same twig, a distinctive Canadian symbol that has been a consistent design element since 1937. The 1978 issue has several known varieties, including doubling on the digits of the date, and its melt value was about 3.5 cents CAD as of early September 2025.
