The obverse of the coin features a laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a laurel wreath, designed by Mary Gillick, with the Latin inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA.” The reverse showcases a detailed beaver sitting on a log, designed by G. E. Kruger-Gray, representing Canada’s iconic symbol of industry. The coin was minted in large circulation (over 46 million) by the Royal Canadian Mint and is magnetic due to its nickel composition. There is also a notable variety known as the “Double Date” where the date appears doubled because of die deterioration doubling. The coin has a smooth medal alignment axis and its design reflects the classic style of mid-20th-century Canadian coinage.
