2022 – 2 Dollars Toonie Canada

In 2022, Canada issued two notable $2 coins featuring the polar bear design by artist Brent Townsend. One is the standard circulation “Toonie,” depicting an adult polar bear on an ice floe with the same traditional bi-metallic composition and specifications (6.92 g weight, 28 mm diameter). The other is a special “Black Ring Toonie,” a solemn tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, which features the polar bear surrounded by a distinctive black-nickel outer ring symbolizing mourning, a first for a Canadian circulation coin, with a proof-like finish and the same size and weight as the standard coin. Both showcase the iconic polar bear image in early summer on ice, continuing Canada’s tradition since 1996.​
