The 1998 Canadian 2-dollar coin, commonly called the “Toonie,” is a bi-metallic coin featuring a nickel outer ring with an aluminum bronze core, designed by Brent Townsend to depict an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe. The coin weighs 7.3 grams, has a diameter of 28 mm, and its obverse side displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, crafted by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. This coin uses a patented locking mechanism to securely bind the two metal sections, and in 1998, special proof coins were also minted with a composition of 92.5% silver and a gold-plated inner core. A total of 5,309,000 standard coins were produced in 1998, intended for circulation, with additional collector versions available.
