Canada released two special $2 coins in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1972 Summit Series hockey competition between Canada and the Soviet Union. Both coins honor the historic triumph of Team Canada, a moment that united Canadians and transcended sport. One coin features a classic engraved non-colour design by artist Joel Kimmel, depicting two hockey players from the series set against the team’s maple leaf jersey emblem, surrounded by the coaches’ initials and players’ jersey numbers, symbolizing Team Canada’s spirit; it has a very limited mintage of just 10,000 rolls. The other is a colourized version of the same design with selective red accents on the maple leaf and players’ jerseys, gloves, and socks, produced as uncirculated circulation coins with a larger mintage of 3 million (2 million colorized), designed to reach everyday Canadians through circulation. Both coins bear the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and reflect the enduring legacy of the Summit Series as a unifying national event.
