The two Canadian 2-dollar coins made in 2002 are bi-metallic coins commonly known as “Toonies,” featuring an outer ring of 99% nickel and an aluminum-bronze inner core (92% copper, 6% aluminum, 2% nickel). The reverse of the coin displays an image of an adult polar bear on an ice floe in early summer, designed by wildlife artist Brent Townsend, while the obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. With a diameter of 28 mm, weight of 7.3 grams, and a distinctive bi-metallic coin locking mechanism patented by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin was first introduced in 1996 to replace the two-dollar bill. The 2002 coin had a mintage of approximately 27 million coins, and the design includes a spline interrupted edge. A notable variant of the 2002 coin is the “2002 – Dot” version, which carries extra collector value.
