The 1940 Canadian 5-cent coin, commonly known as the “nickel,” was minted in a composition of 100% nickel, weighing 4.54 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm and a plain smooth edge. It features on the obverse a bare-headed portrait of King George VI with the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D : G : REX ET IND : IMP :”, which means “George VI, by the grace of God, King and Emperor of India.” The reverse depicts a beaver sitting on a log within a rock-studded mound of earth rising from water, designed by G.E. Kruger-Gray. This coin was magnetic and had a circulation mintage of 13,820,197 pieces issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.
