The 1977 Canadian 5 cents coin known as the “Low 7” variety features a distinct numeric characteristic where the last digit “7” in the date is positioned slightly lower than in the more common “High 7” variety. Both varieties share the same design elements: the obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, designed by Arnold Machin, and the reverse depicts a beaver on a log, created by G.E. Kruger-Gray, minted by the Royal Canadian Mint with a nickel composition. This version has a diameter of 21.21 mm, weighs 4.54 grams, has a smooth plain edge, and is magnetic. The gap between the date and the word “CANADA” is slightly wider in the Low 7 variety, and the tip of the last 7 extends more to the right side of the upright on the letter “D” of “CANADA” compared to the High 7. Circulated specimens typically show signs of wear, but uncirculated and mint state coins exist with significantly higher collector value. The Low 7 is considered scarcer and more valuable in mint condition than the High 7 variety, with market prices ranging notably higher in MS (Mint State) grades.
