The 1999 Canadian 5 cents coin, commonly known as the nickel, features a beaver on a log on its reverse side, designed by G.E. Kruger-Gray, and the obverse side bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a diamond crown, designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. It has a diameter of 21.2 mm, a weight of 4.6 grams, and is composed of cupro-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel). The coin has a plain edge and uses medal alignment for its axis. In 1999, Canada also tested production of some 5-cent coins using a patented multi-layer plating technology with steel as a base metal to reduce costs, though the standard circulation coin was still primarily cupro-nickel. The mint state values ranged significantly based on condition, with a melt value around 6.4 cents CAD.
