The 2009 Canadian 2-dollar coin, commonly known as the “Toonie,” is a bi-metallic coin featuring an image of an adult polar bear on an ice floe designed by wildlife artist Brent Townsend. Made with an outer ring of 99% nickel and an inner core primarily of copper, aluminum, and nickel, it weighs 7.3 grams and has a diameter of 28 millimeters. The coin was introduced in 1996 to replace the two-dollar bill and is known for its patented bi-metallic locking mechanism and durability, lasting approximately 20 times longer than paper currency. The obverse side in 2009 featured the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Susanna Blunt, and the coin has segmented reeding on its edge.
