2018 – 2 Dollars Toonie Canada – Armistice Color

The 2018 Canadian $2 coin, designed by artist Laurie McGaw, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which marked the end of the First World War. This colored version features a brass-plated inner core with a soldier’s helmet symbolizing the war’s end and a large scarlet poppy below it, representing remembrance inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields.” The nickel-plated outer ring showcases two additional engraved poppies and a banner with bilingual inscriptions “REMEMBER” and “SOUVENIR,” alongside the year “2018.” The coin’s obverse presents the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The selective vivid red coloring on the poppy highlights the theme of remembrance and sacrifice associated with the historic event.
