The 2018 Canadian 5 cents coin features the traditional design by British artist G.E. Kruger-Gray, depicting a beaver sitting on a log surrounded by water, symbolizing Canada’s industriousness and heritage. The coin’s obverse shows an uncrowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedry-Hunt. The circulating coin is made of copper-plated steel (94.5% steel, 3.5% copper, 2% nickel), weighs 3.95 grams, has a diameter of 21.1 mm, and a smooth edge. In addition to the regular circulation coin, there was a special 5-ounce pure silver collector’s coin with selective rose gold plating released in 2018 as part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s “Big Coins” series. This large collector’s coin had a diameter of 65 mm, featured the same iconic beaver design but was crafted in pure silver with rose gold highlights, and was limited to a mintage of 1,500 pieces.
