The 2022 Canadian $2 coin with a black outer ring is a special circulation coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II and her historic 70-year reign. The coin features the traditional Brent Townsend polar bear design on the reverse, with the black outer ring serving as a symbol of mourning reminiscent of a mourning armband, surrounding both the polar bear and the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt on the obverse. The composition consists of a multi-ply black nickel-plated steel outer ring and a multi-ply brass-plated aluminum bronze inner core, weighing 6.92 grams with a diameter of 28 millimeters. This unique design marks the first time a black-nickel colored design is used on a Canadian circulation coin’s outer ring, symbolizing the nation’s mourning for the Queen’s passing. Nearly five million of these coins were released for circulation starting late December 2022, providing Canadians with a meaningful tribute to remember the monarch they had known throughout their lives.​
